Realism – Cuban Dreams

A thickening mist of false pessimism covers our modern society, blinding its people to the abundance of beauty and opportunities of experiencing joy in everyday life. An awake and aware person is referred to as an optimist. Though, one only needs to slow down and simplify, disconnecting from modern routines and their induced fears, to become aware again of the reality of life’s abundance. A true optimist is nothing more than a realist.

Those who believe in the abundance and exert dedicated efforts towards opening doors and overcoming walls will reach their dreams. It is this approach to life that allowed my unschooled parents to go from shepherding for daily surival in a remote undeveloped village in the mountains of Morocco, to enabling me to live a dream of holding a camera and capture and share glimpses and thoughts with minds of a wider world.

In Vedado, a residential neighborhood of Havana, I was welcomed to engage with these young minds during their English class. At the end of the day, I handed them the assignment to spend a few minutes dreaming of the work they would enjoy doing in life, without limiting themselves to what their parents have achieved. The day after, I handed them these printed photographs, serving as an occasional and gentle reminder of their dreams.

Dream Big Reach High.
